This novel method of coupling peridynamics with a highly efficient mesh in the hydraulic fracture model will be fully detailed in this dissertation. In addition, 2D and 3D results will be provided using this method, demonstrating the capability of the coupled model to simulate complex fracture behavior, as well as discuss its impact on simulation capabilities and performance. In this work, a nonlocal peridynamics---smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) coupling formulation has been developed and implemented to simulate soil fragmentation induced by buried explosions. A uniform discretization scheme is used throughout this study. However, non-uniform discretization can also be possible by using small grid sizes at critical regions such as interfaces and utilizing the “Dual-horizon peridynamics” concept, as introduced by Ren et al.

This concept has been used to formulate the Consistency model (Wang, 1997; Wang et al., 1997), which appeared to be an efficient and useful tool in the simulation of Lüders bands and Portevin–Le Chatelier effects in metals. Peridynamics is a new continuum mechanics formulation and it is very suitable to predict fracture initiation and propagation due to its mathematical structure. It is also advantageous to solve moving boundary problems as in the lithiation process considered in this study which is difficult to handle by using traditional techniques Alternatively, viscoplasticity can be modeled by incorporating the rate-dependency in a yield function.
